Thursday afternoon the Jacksonville Jaguars extended quarterback Trevor Lawrence to a $275 million contract, coming out to $55 million per year. The former top pick in the 2021 NFL Draft has put up a 20-30 record as a starter, along with 58 touchdowns and 39 interceptions.
While the biggest winner of this news is clearly Trevor Lawrence and company, the biggest losers are the Dallas Cowboys and the Miami Dolphins. Both have big contract decisions to be made with their star quarterbacks. While Dak has appeared patient and content with taking this to free agency, Tua has voiced his frustration while talking to reporters.
Of all three quarterbacks mentioned in this article, Dak Prescott stands out in a league of his own. The 2023 MVP runner up put up 4,516 yards, 36 touchdowns and 9 interceptions while leading the Cowboys to a third straight 12-5 season. For reference, these are all feats Trevor Lawrence has never hit.
In just the 2023 season, Prescott scored about 62% of Lawrence's three year career touchdown count (while sitting out several 4th quarters).
All in all, the Cowboys will likely need to pay Prescott somewhere in the $65 million per year range or higher to retain their star quarterback past the 2024 season. All this, while still needing to sign stars Ceedee Lamb and Micah Parsons to new contracts.
Jerry Jones said he wanted to wait to see "more leaves fall" before making a move on new contracts, and he may not be liking the leaves he's seeing in the air right now.
